My Pick: A Night Divided: The Berlin Wall

A Night Divided
By Jennifer A. Nielsen
SLXLM
This book was actually nominated for Virginia Readers choice, and that was how I found this book.
There was talk about a wall, but no one thought it would ever be built. The east was tightening up security, and Gerta’s Family was thinking of moving. Gerta’s Dad was the one who finally made the decision that he and Dominique, Gerta’s older brother, would seek a job and house before taking the rest of the family over. The morning right after they left though, the worst possible happened. The wall went up. Now, their family was separated, maybe even forever.
At that time, Gerta and her older brother Fritz wanted to escape the wall, while their mother, who wanted to keep out of trouble, rather follow the ridiculous rules of the east than risk her life to go west.
But as the book continues, they witness more and more cruelty that happened to the ones that didn’t follow the rules of the east. No one can be trusted. Will she and her family ever reunite in the west? Will they still have the courage to escape? Read to find out! Get the book here.

       History
Canada is like the US in some ways, like the fact that a european explorer discovered it. In the year of 1534,  Jacques Cartier (or Quartier), a french mariner and explorer discovered Canada. Like America, there were also natives to the land.
“First Nations people in Canada are the people who used to be called “Indians,” but this term is now considered incorrect by some. Early European explorers thought they were in India when they landed in North America, so they called the original inhabitants “Indians.” Many people who were misnamed “Indians” now prefer to be called First Nations. First Nations people identify themselves by the nation to which they belong, for example, Mohawk, Cree, Oneida, and so on.”Aboriginal” is a term that includes First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. In the 2011 National Household Survey, there were 1,836,035 people in Canada who reported having Aboriginal ancestry. This represents 5.6% of the Canadian population.” According to aadnc.com.

The Only National Park in Quebec that has dog friendly trails, so be sure to bring your pets!
“It is strictly forbidden to take a domestic animal for a walk or hike without putting a leash on it, allow a domestic animal to chase, aggress or bite a person or a wild animal and to fail to remove any dog waste.

Domestic animals are allowed on hiking trail provided that they are kept on a leash at all times.
By keeping your dog on a leash, you’ll be looking after its safety and sparing yourself a lot of worry. It is an effective way of keeping it from sniffing a porcupine. Forillon park is home to a large population of these animals, which can be encountered everywhere. It happens way too often that dogs let off their leash wind up with a nose full of quills. A leash is also useful for preventing your dog from falling from the top of one of the cliffs inside the park.”

My Pick: Inside Out And Back Again: Vietnam War By Ashley

Inside Out & Back Again
Novel by Thanhha Lai
SLXLM

As you can see, this book has gotten many awards, like the Newberry Honor and the National Book Award.
This book was very unique, as it told the story in the way of a poem. The story it told, took place in Vietnam at the time of war with a girl called Há, her mother, and her three older brothers, Brothers Khoi, Vu, and Quang.
In the book, it tells a tale of a Vietnam girl and her family escaping the Vietnam war, and leaving the only place she had ever known, Home.
After they endure the trip to America, She and her brothers find it hard to get used to the way it was in America. Há also learns a valuable lesson from her mom:
“Oh, My Daughter, at times you have to fight, but preferably, not with your fits.”
It was to mean, using force is not a way to go when solving a problem. To read this book, you can buy it here.

Educational Websites By Ashley Ding

                 The 21st Century
Today, we have many resources in the 21st for teaching than ever before! In the 21st century, we can now access many kinds of resources, like online resources, websites and more, rather than just relying on paper. Nowadays, there are many new resources like online resources and games. New studies show that online games can improve the learning environment and learning in general.
“Math video games can enhance students’ motivation to learn, but it may depend on how students play, researchers at NYU’s Steinhardt School and the City University of New York have found in a study of middle-schoolers.
One candidate is educational video games, which, at first glance, would seem to result in performance rather than mastery orientations given their competitive focus and that they are often played with others.
But, given the popularity of gaming among school-aged students, exploring their potential value intrigued the study’s authors. To test this possibility, the researchers had middle-school students play the video game FactorReactor, which is designed to build math skills through problem-solving and therefore serves as diagnostic for learning. In order to test the impact of different settings on learning, students were randomly assigned to play the game alone, competitively against another student, or collaboratively with another student.
The researchers controlled for students’ abilities by conducting a pre-test.The findings revealed that students who played the math game either competitively or collaboratively reported the strongest mastery goal orientations, which indicates that students adopted an optimal mindset for learning while playing the video game with others.Their results also showed that students playing under competitive situations performed best in the game. In addition, those playing in both competitive and collaborative conditions experienced the greatest interest and enjoyment.”
Said the NYU. (Read more about this topic from the NYU here!)
                    Online Resources
Collaboration is important for students and teachers, which is why many companies have created websites and such to help teachers keep track of online work and collaborations. Some of the candidates are:
-Google Classroom                   By Google                   (See more on website here)
-Teacher Advisor                     By IBM (Watson)       (See more on website here)
-Docebo                                     By:?                               (See more on website here)
Differences
But today, we are going to mainly talk about IBM Watson’s Teacher Advisor and Google’s Google Classroom. I went ahead and tried both of them and found out that the main difference was that Google was more focused on the collaboration part, while IBM was more focused on the curriculum.
Teacher Advisor
The IBM Watson’s Teacher advisor is really interesting, as it has activities, worksheets, and games. In Teacher Advisor, you can search the topic you may want to teach, and it will show some worksheets, activities, and games. While I was at Teacher Advisor, I noticed that with the activities, the teachers also get a curriculum document which tells what strategies are included and overall what the activity teaches. Here is a picture of the Grade five adding fractions document: math-g5-m3-topic-b-lesson-3
As you can see, it also uses Common Core and EngageNY. Learn more about Teacher Advisor Here.
Google Classroom
The Google Classroom is based like all the Google products, like Google Slides and Docs, It’s very open, and it is based on collaboration, where everyone can work together, sort of like an online forum. It also advertises the Google Brand, where teachers can add Google Slides, Docs, Sheets, Forms, or Video and pdf file. To turn things in, you can either “Mark as done” or you can also attach a google drive product and then turn it in. After you turn in your work, (Or mark as done,) Your teacher can see that you have turned it in, and you may no longer make changes to your work. Google Classroom is rather simple, where teachers get stuff from their own sources and post it on Google Classroom, Rather than the teacher advisor, where the source is there. Learn more about Google Classroom here.
Pro-Con:
Website Price Usabilities Easy to use Other
Google Classroom Free Forum Yes Way to overrated because of the Google brand.
Teacher Advisor Free Source Yes Really good source for worksheets, (And it’s free!)
Conclusion
The Teacher Advisor is more of a Source, And Google Classroom is more of a collaborative forum for teachers and students. Google Classroom is also more online but is more openminded. Teacher advisor though is a good resource with many worksheets, activities, games, and strategies.

Book Club: The One And Only Ivan By Ashley Ding, Apoorva Tegginahalli

The One and Only Ivan was written by Katherine. A . Applegate. (See other books by her here. She also wrote an award-winning book, Crenshaw.) In this book, there is gorilla named Ivan, A elephant named Stella, a dog named Bob, Julia and her dad the janitor George, and a baby elephant named Ruby.

This is also a great book for animal lovers! This book has an interesting approach using animal perspectives instead of human telling the story and sharing their view. it also shows how Humans can hurt animals without realizing and for their own good. This amazing book is a classic children’s literature, suitable for children age 9 and beyond.

And if you still don’t believe that this book is amazing, just look at all the awards it has gotten! The One and Only Ivan won a Newbery Medal.

SLXLM

The One and Only Ivan is a work of fiction, but the inspiration for this imagined tale lies with a true story.

Ivan, a real gorilla, lived at Zoo Atlanta, but on the way to that happy ending, he spent almost three decades without seeing another of his own kind before being moved to Zoo Atlanta in 1994.

After being captured as in infant in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ivan’s female companion, reported to have been his twin, died en route to the US or shortly thereafter), Ivan was raised in a home until he became unmanageable. At that point, he was added to an odd collection of animals housed in a circus-themed mall in Washington state.

Ivan spent twenty-seven years of his life alone in a cage. Over time, as an understanding of primate needs and behavior grew, public discomfort with Ivan’s lonely state grew as well, particularly after he was featured in a National Geographic special entitled “The Urban Gorilla.” A public outcry followed, including heartfelt letters from children. When the mall where Ivan lived went bankrupt, he was placed on permanent loan to Zoo Atlanta, which houses the largest group of captive western lowland gorillas in the nation.

Ivan became a beloved celebrity at Zoo Atlanta, where he lived contentedly with other gorillas, although he never sired any offspring. He was known for his paintings, which were often “signed” with his thumbprint. Ivan died on August 20, 2012, at the age of 50.

Ivan and Kinyani were real gorillas — and so, by the way, was Jambo, whose story is recounted in the book. But all other characters and situations in the novel are entirely the product of my imagination. When I started to write about the grim facts of Ivan’s solitary existence, a new tale slowly began to take shape. At least on the page, where anything is possible, I wanted to give Ivan (even while captive behind the walls of his tiny cage) a voice of his own and a story to tell.

I wanted to give him someone to protect, and the chance to be the mighty silverback he was always meant to be.” Said  Theoneandonlyivan.com. Visit this site here.

Ivan is an easygoing gorilla, all he had to do was to play in his glass domain, watch people come see him, and wait to be fed. He Lives at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade with his friend Bob, Stella, and Julia. He is an artist his drawing is in a gift shop and is priced at a fair price. His friend Julia is a human. Ivan thinks that humans talk too much, wastes words, or eat words. Stella is an old elephant and Bob is a dog, that acts like Ivan’s companion. Their Ivan’s best friends

One day, a new baby animal comes. Her name is Ruby, and she is an elephant like Stella. She is young and sticks to Stella. She is here to perform in the rink with Mac. Mac is the owner of The Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Mac trains with Ruby, but she doesn’t go out without Stella.

On the other hand, though, Stella’s leg infections got worse, and nobody can do anything about it. And soon enough, she is too weak and sick to continue doing circus performing. While all of this is going on, Mac is losing money, as Stella stops performing. Mac thinks he could save some money by postponing a vet visit, (For Stella) but pays the price of Stella’s life and Ruby’s only friend, with guilt.

But as Stella’s slowly slipping away one night, she says to Ivan to protect Ruby even after she has passed away. She even made him promise to her that he would never let Ruby live the life of a Circus performer, because of her scary past experiences.

The next day, Stella was tossed into a garbage truck. Ivan, Bob, and Ruby could only sit in despair in their domains watching as their old friend was thrown out. They had lost a valuable friend that day.

Ivan, on the other hand, was thinking about his promise the Stella. He thought all day. “I Can’t talk, no human can understand me.” It was so hard for Ivan to think of a way to help Ruby, Ivan was just about to give up on Ruby’s freedom  when Bob had the intention to tell Ivan that he can’t give up on Ruby, and always remember Stella’s last wish and the fact that  Ivan had promised. Bob also wanted to say that this was a promise worth keeping.

When Julia comes she gives Ivan a paper and a red crayon. Ivan had an idea if he can’t talk why don’t draw it out? He tried to hide it from George Julia’s dad and the janitor. One day, when George was cleaning Ivan’s domain he found the papers hidden below the pool of filthy water and thought of selling them to the gift shop, Ivan did not give up.

He started over again and he made sure to be more careful. Finally the painting of his weeks’ hard work. Would it work, or would it miserably fail …? Ivan thought. It was time, Julia was drawing again instead of doing her homework. Ivan caught her attention.  Ivan kept on showing the bundles of paper in his gorilla sized hands. Julia understood it was important at once and saw that when she put the pieces together it spelled H-O-M-E. HOME! They put it up on the billboard, with the help of George, Julia’s Dad. The next day protesters came to help Ruby out signs were saying “ Free Ruby, Animals should be treated like humans too”, “Ruby is free”, “Animals should be treated equally to us!” Then caught by the drama, some people from the zoo came and took Ruby and Ivan to a zoo. Finally Ruby was with other elephants and Ivan was with other gorillas. Bob was with Julia and George is going to be working at the zoo rather than the mall now. That concludes our summary of The One and Only Ivan.

We felt really sorry for Ruby and Stella throughout the book as they were treated with cruelty by Mac, who wanted only Fame, and the Paychecks that came with it.

The main Lessons that Ivan learned was to:

“Always keep your promises ” And

“Always protect the more vulnerable.”
